One developer, one AI, and a question: what if reasoning was part of the language?

Mohio is the first commercially available programming language with AI reasoning built into the syntax. This is where it came from, what it stands for, and the standard we hold every line of it to.

It started in a Dunkin' drive-thru.

Mohio began the way a lot of real things do - not in a lab, but in a car on the side of I-77 with a coffee going cold in the cup holder. The idea was simple and a little stubborn: every other language treats AI as something you bolt on afterward, a library you wire up and hope behaves. What if reasoning were a first-class part of the language itself - with fallbacks, confidence thresholds, and an audit trail the compiler actually enforced?

From that question to a working compiler took 14 days. One developer and an AI, building in early mornings, lunch breaks, and late evenings. Grammar, parser, transformer, interpreter, CLI, and an HTTP runtime - then a live text adventure running entirely in Mohio to prove it wasn't a slide deck.

It's still moving at that pace. But speed was never the point. The point was building something honest enough to last - and that takes a standard, not just a sprint.

Where Mohio was founded
I-77, Charlotte - March 23, 2026. The first lines of Mohio, sketched on a phone.

From a drive-through line to a working language.

Twenty-five years of wanting to build a better language. It only became possible - and necessary - when AI could do the reasoning and compliance became something software had to prove. Here's the arc, roughly to scale.

  1. Mar 23

    The move

In a drive-through line with AI open on a phone, the core idea got fleshed out: tenets, core elements, and an initial roadmap, all within the hour. A 25-year 'someday' became day one.

  2. Mar 24

    Concept & name

Concept and name research, landing on Mohio, Māori for 'to understand'.

  3. Mar 25

    Decision & intent

Committed, and publicly announced the intent to build.

  4. Late Mar

    Foundations

Most foundational constructs and the core primitives sorted out.

  5. Early Apr

    A working compiler

About two weeks in: a working compiler running real Mohio code.

  6. April

    Services & data

About 75% of the mio services designed and several implemented, mio serve running, and MoQL, the query layer, created.

  7. Apr to now

    Acceleration

First provisional patent filed and the live Zork demo working. The full Language Design Document completed and 80-90% implemented, with AI and compliance fully built in. Daily compiler improvements, down to details like number formatting. Three more provisionals filed, eight more researched, with new claims emerging nearly every day. The Pioneer Program designed, announced, and onboarding its first members. The education plan mapped out.

  8. Today

A language you can ship a game in

Built nights, lunch breaks, and weekends, around a full-time job and a family. One developer and an AI. That's the story.

We believe software should be about the problem you're solving, not the scaffolding around it. Mohio is a language anyone can read, understand, and control - powerful enough for a bank, simple enough for a first line of code - so the hours that used to disappear into staying compliant and tying twenty things together go back to what matters: the logic, and the customer.
The future of software isn't AI bolted onto languages built for another era. It's AI woven into the language itself. Mohio's vision is to future-proof the people who build: to let developers grow with AI instead of being replaced by it, to end the endless stack of tools and glue code, and to free minds tangled in cryptic syntax. When the language carries the complexity, developers get their craft back. Thinking. Creating. Building a future they're part of, not slaves to.
The language

To 1.0 - stable, fully documented, and proven on real applications beyond the demos.

The profiles

Certified, legally-reviewed sector packs for more industries, kept current as regulations change.

The next generation

Mohio in classrooms and an education track, so a first language can also be a serious one.

The ecosystem

An AI-native stack on the open core - a fine-tuned Mohio model, a build surface, and a community library.

The Working Agreement

Fifteen rules for a value-driven product. Not a poster on a wall - the actual standard every fix, feature, and session is held to. It's worded for builders here; the spirit is the same whether you're a teenager or a bank.

Build philosophy

The opinions baked into the language - most of them learned from watching other tools rise and fall.

No lock-in

Runs anywhere

Today it runs anywhere Python does: laptop, Docker, a Lambda, an edge node, on-prem, or the cloud. The path ahead is a self-contained, Rust-based runtime you can drop in with no dependencies at all. Either way the promise holds: no license server, no proprietary deployment, no lock-in, and an open core that is genuinely free.

The real win

Developer performance, not raw speed

Mohio isn't faster than Go or Rust, and we'll never claim it is - it runs at roughly Python speed. What it changes is how fast you build, how easily anyone reads the result, and how few bugs survive the trip.

By default

Correctness & compliance, not afterthoughts

Mandatory AI fallbacks, confidence thresholds, and audit trails are part of the language, not bolted on. Declare a sector and the technical enforcement controls switch on. You only pay for what you declare.

The filter

Readable by design - the Walk-By Test

If a manager can walk past a screen and understand the business intent in three seconds without knowing Mohio, the syntax passed. Readability beats cleverness every time.

Milestones that actually mean something

Not vanity numbers - real, measured results from building the language.

7.14×
faster mio check
A measured 714% speedup, earned by AST caching - the simplest fix, not the cleverest one. Working Agreement #11 in the wild.
~0ms
re-checks when nothing changed
When cached code has no errors, the compiler skips re-validation and goes straight to commit. Effectively instant.
Patent pending
Phase 1
complete · Phase 2 underway
Grammar, parser, transformer, interpreter, CLI, and HTTP runtime are done. Phase 2 is being implemented now.
Live
a real app, in Mohio
A full text adventure runs entirely in Mohio at zork.mohio.io - fewer lines and far cleaner than the conventional build.

Momentum

People

Pioneers are joining

The invite-and-apply Pioneer Program is onboarding its first builders - including young coders learning Mohio as an early language.

Learning

Educational materials in progress

Beginner-friendly base docs are being written so a newcomer can go from zero to their first running program - and yes, build their own Zork.

Outreach

Bringing it to classrooms

We're working to introduce an intro-to-Mohio session in schools - starting close to home, with more to follow.

Quick facts about Mohio

Who created Mohio?
Mohio was created by Ron Smith, founder of Particular LLC, based in Charlotte, North Carolina - built by one developer working alongside AI.
When was Mohio founded?
March 23, 2026. A working compiler followed within 14 days, and the first public GitHub commit confirms the date.
What is the Mohio Working Agreement?
A 15-rule standard for building a value-driven product - no workarounds, quality built in from the first keystroke, root-cause fixes, and continuous improvement. It governs every change to the language.
Is Mohio open source?
Yes. The language and base compiler are open source under Apache 2.0. Commercial tiers - certified sector profiles, the hosted runtime, and compliance dashboards - are licensed separately.
What is Mohio's current status?
Phase 1 of the compiler is complete and Phase 2 is in progress. A full text adventure runs live in Mohio at zork.mohio.io. Mohio is pre-public-launch, with an invite-and-apply Pioneer Program onboarding early users.
